EILEEN KIM: Crafting Joy through Design as a Happy Meal Toy Designer

Eileen Kim is a designer at The Marketing Store, where she creates some of the most recognizable toys in the world: McDonald’s Happy Meal toys. From conceptualizing playful designs to bridging the gap between engineering and creativity, Eileen’s role is both innovative and impactful. In this interview, she shares her journey of turning a passion for creative design into a successful career as a Happy Meal toy designer.

Introduction

Q: Please introduce yourself. What do you do, and what projects are you currently involved in?

A: Hi, my name is Eileen Kim!

I’m currently an industrial designer at The Marketing Store, where I design toys for McDonald’s Happy Meal. My role involves everything from brainstorming new ideas to selecting colors and 3D modeling. In addition, my team manages packaging design and serves as the bridge between the engineering team and the creative drawing team, ensuring that all elements come together seamlessly to create engaging and functional products.

We typically work a year in advance on our programs, so while I can’t reveal too much about our current projects just yet, I can share that we’re working on some kick-ass designs. For example, I’ve had the opportunity to work on toys for Space Jam, Encanto, Inside Out, Pokémon, and several other popular franchises.

It’s a rewarding process to see our concepts come to life!

Discovering the Spark

Q: How did you first discover your passion? Was there a specific moment that made you realize this could be more than a hobby?

A: My passion for industrial design really ignited during college. I’ve always had an interest in miniatures and kitschy, cute designs—those irresistible items that make you splurge on something you didn’t even know you needed. While many of my professors urged me to focus on sleek, high-end aesthetics, I just couldn’t help but embrace this funky, playful style.

One of my favorite professors, Ceci Gomez, told me, ‘Just go for it! If that’s your style, own it. The right job will come to you.’

Her words were like a burst of confidence in my career path. That moment made me realize that my love for fun, playful designs wasn’t just a quirky hobby but something that could actually shape my future.

From College to Career

Q: What were the initial steps you took to establish yourself in the field? Was your approach more structured or organic?

A: My approach was a mix of both structured planning and organic development. Initially, I focused on building a strong foundation by taking the right classes and internships. I also completed an external partnership at Paper Source and Kikkerland NYC, where I gained experience and insight into the industry.

Building a solid portfolio became a priority for me to showcase my abilities and creativity—I truly cannot emphasize this enough.

Having a strong portfolio is crucialit truly serves as a key tool in standing out in the field.

Navigating Challenges

Q: What major challenges did you face while turning your passion into a career, and how did you overcome them?

A: Art school is definitely not cheap (haha), and while I was fortunate to have parental support, they didn’t cover all my expenses. I had to get creative with budgeting for materials and tools.

I spent time finding cost-effective yet high-quality supplies that allowed me to fully express my ideas without breaking the bank. It wasn’t always easy, but it taught me to be more resourceful.

Q: What’s been the most rewarding part of your journey so far?

A: The most rewarding part has been seeing my ideas come to life.

It’s incredibly fulfilling to watch my nephews get excited about the new McDonald’s Happy Meal toys I’ve worked on.

Defining Success

Q: How do you define success, and has your definition changed over time?

A: There isn’t a single ‘Aha!’ moment for me—at least not yet (haha)—but rather a series of experiences where I’ve felt proud and fulfilled.

Success is an ongoing journey of striving for new goals and embracing the process.

Be persistent and stay true to yourself.

Words of Wisdom

Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to turn their passion into a full-time career?

A: It’s important to have a clear vision and set achievable goals, but also be flexible and open to unexpected opportunities.

After college, I didn’t immediately land my “dream” job, but I didn’t let that discourage me. I began my career at LG Electronics, designing home appliances. While it wasn’t my ideal position, it helped me develop digital skills and understand product engineering.

Be persistent and stay true to yourself.

Avoiding Burnout

Q: How do you stay inspired and avoid burnout?

A: Attending design shows, art galleries, and networking events keeps me connected with others in the field. These interactions often spark new ideas.

Working on personal projects that excite me is a great way to stay inspired, such as visiting various stores to research new designs. Drawing and taking classes also help further develop my skills.

Toy designs even show up in my dreams sometimes (LOL)!

Future Projects & Goals

Q: What are your upcoming projects or goals?

A: I’m excited about several upcoming projects, including new designs for McDonald’s Happy Meal toys.

While I can’t share too many details yet, I’m really looking forward to the creative direction we’re exploring.

Stay tuned and eat more Happy Meals!
